National Register of Citizens of India
The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a register of all Indian citizens and the purpose of the NRC is to document of all Indian citizen and identify the illegal immigrants of other countries in India. It is implemented only for Assam state staring in 2013-14 and will be implemented nationwide by 2021.

Who is a Citizen of India?
- As per the citizenship act 1955, every person born in India
- on or after the 26th day of January 1950
- On or after 26th January 1950, but before the commencement of the Citizenship
- On or after such commencement, shall be a citizen of India by descent if either of his
parents is a citizen of India at the time of his birth:
National Register of Indian Citizens
The Registrar General of Citizen Registration shall establish and maintain the National Register of Indian Citizens.
The National Register of Indian Citizens shall be divided into two sub-parts consisting of the State Register of Indian Citizens, the District Register of Indian Citizens.
The National Register of Indian Citizens shall contain the following particulars in respect of every Citizen, namely:-
- Name
- Fatherís name
- Motherís name
- Sex
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
- Residential address (present and permanent)
- Marital status and if ever married, name of the spouse
- Visible identification mark
- Date of registration of Citizen
- The serial number of registration
- National Identity Number
Preparation of the National Register of Indian Citizens
The Central Government shall, for the purpose of National Register of Indian Citizens, cause to carry throughout the country a house-to-house enumeration for collection of specified particulars relating to each family and individual, residing in a local area including the Citizenship status.
The Registrar General of Citizen Registration shall notify the period and duration of the enumeration in the Official Gazette.
For the purposes of preparation and inclusion in the Local Register of Indian Citizens, the particulars collected of every family and individual in the Population Register shall be verified and scrutinized by the Local Registrar, who may be assisted by one or more persons as specified by the Registrar General of Citizen Registration.
During the verification process, particulars of such individuals, whose Citizenship is doubtful, shall be entered by the Local Registrar with an appropriate remark in the Population Register for further enquiry and in case of doubtful Citizenship, the individual or the family shall be informed in a specified proforma

National Population Register
NPR is the list of both citizen and no citizen, this definition was stated by Kirren Rijiju (minister of state for home affairs) in Rajya Sabha, that was released on 26 Nov 2014.
The government of India stated that NPR is the first step toward the NRC by identifying the citizenship of every person in the country.
It is prepared as per the provisions of citizenship act 1955, Nationa identity card rules 2003 passed by the BJP government. The listing is being done at the village level, district level, state level and national level, every person of the country needs to be registered under the NPR.
As per the citizenship rules 2003, the centre issued an order to register every person and create NRC based on the collected data in the NPR. As per this rule, the officials at the local level will decide to add the name of the person to the NRC or not thereby deciding his/or her citizenship status. No further rules and regulation are needed to exercise this in the whole country.
Implementation of NRC
Cabinet approved ₹3,941 crores for updating NPR on 24 Dec 2019, after updating the NPR, then it is easy to create the data for NRC and government decided to schedule the NPR in the whole country by Apr-2020.
The Registrar General of Citizen Registration issued the notification to update and prepare the NPR on 31st July 2019. As per the NPR exercise, an enumeration will be carried out throughout the Nation except Assam)by visiting every single house and gathering information with respect to the people who they are living within the jurisdiction of the Local Registrar
